programmable thermostats, Cincinnati, OhioAdding a programmable thermostat allows Cincinnati area homeowners better control over their comfort level and can reduce energy consumption if used correctly. But which one is the right one for your needs?

Typically, programmable thermostats have four pre-programmed settings which they sustain within two degrees. However, before comparing the other options, first assess how often you regularly spend time away from home and then review the following three models:

  • 5+2 thermostat - If your weekday and weekend schedules typically remain consistent, a 5+2 thermostat is a good choice. With this model, one mode works for the five weekdays and another can be programmed for the two weekend days.
  • 5-1-1 thermostat - A 5-1-1 programmable thermostat is a better choice when your weekday schedule is consistent, but your Saturday and Sunday routines differ.
  • 7-day thermostat - If the time you spend away from home varies day-to-day, a 7-day programmable thermostat will provide the most flexibility. This model usually allows you to program four differing temperature settings per day.

After you’ve selected the correct model for your particular lifestyle, you can compare the following available, additional features:

  • Indicators - Available indicators include the heating and cooling stages, an HVAC system malfunction alert, reminders to change the air filter, a clock, an outside temperature display and an estimated time to reach a target temperature. Certain models also provide instant savings feedback.
  • Displays - Besides digital backlit displays, other options include both oversized and touch screens, as well as keypad locks.
  • Programming - Although a manual/vacation override function is typically standard on all programmable thermostats, certain models also allow voice, mobile and Wi-Fi programming.
  • Advanced features - Humidity sensors, programmable fans and ambience sensors are among the available advanced features, as well as adaptive recovery/smart recovery technology, which senses the estimated time to reach the next setpoint temperature and adjusts accordingly.
