Common Misconceptions

Often, homeowners believe that closing vents and doors will stop the airflow from their HVAC systems. It is believed that by closing off certain areas of the home, the airflow will automatically be directed to areas with open registers and reduce utility costs. This is not the case. In fact, closing supply vents can make your Hamilton home less efficient.

Facts About Heating and Air Hamilton Homeowners Can Trust

Closing your supply vents can have negative effects on your HVAC system:

  • The rooms in your home contain both supply and return air vents. When supply vents are closed, the return air vent is still drawing air from the room. This creates a vacuum effect and air will then be pulled from the walls, windows and doors, wherever there is an opening.
  • The air that is coming through the supply vents for heating and air conditioning will still come out of the ductwork. As opposed to going to the room in question, air will force its way out of damaged ductwork and go into areas where it is not needed such as your basement. You are still paying for heating and air, but not receiving the benefit.
  • If too many of the vents are closed your heating and air conditioning equipment can be damaged. Newer HVAC systems are designed to fit the square footage of your home. When vents are closed, your heating and air equipment works harder to distribute the air, causing unnecessary wear on the system.
  • Not heating an area can also effect wood floors and furniture. Wood floors contract when they are not heated which can result in gaps. Additionally, wood furniture can warp.
